31 Brownies from the St Johns School Brownie group led by brown owl Wendy Buckley and 4 helpers did a litter pick throughout the Park. These enthusiastic wee girls did a splendid job, scavenging under all the park benches, collecting not only rubbish but also points for their 'environment' badge. Have a look at the Gallery
8th June 08 - Updates
We have 6 new litter bins including (at last) 2 replacements for the 3 long-term missing from the south end.
The mallard family, originally 5 is now only 3 but is joined by another mallard brood of 4 just a few days old.
8th August 08 - News
On Thursday 7th August, after a night of heavy rain the burn burst its banks and caused flooding across the park. The burn flooded into the pond which then overflowed onto the paths. The debris brought downstream has since been cleared away. The pond which had been at a very low level for some time due to a choked water inlet had warmed up and stagnated due to lack of oxygen. It is now revived and well aerated due to the flash flood.
Proposed Walkway across the North End of the Pond
The City Council, with co-operation from Friends of the Figgate Park, is proposing to build a wooden walkway across the marshy end of the pond. Marsh and water plants will be planted around this feature. The illustrations show a similar feature created by the council in Inverleith Park. This development will enhance our already beautiful park and attract wildlife. The council's policy is to conserve our natural wildlife.

In case some people may have qualms about the project we will hold a meeting soon in the community centre off Northfield Broadway where the plans may be discussed. All members of Friends of the Park and anyone interested are welcome to attend. The date of the meeting has not yet been fixed but will be displayed in the park before the event.

an empty suitcase was retrieved from the burn near the Northfield Drive gate. It was labelled with a QANTAS airline label and addressed to a gentleman in Australia. 13 Clothing items were found in the burn and on the bank near the case. The local police have been informed and a letter sent to the genleman in Australia.
Seasonal Bonfires in the Park
On 5th Nov. there was a small bonfire in the park near the Mountcastle entrance. This was much smaller than in recent years and caused little damage and litter. However on the evening of 8th Nov. a bonfire was made of a pile of telephone directories opposite the kidies playpark. These were only partially burnt and strong winds scattered the pages towards the trees and the far corner at the railway.
I have cleared 4 plastic sacks of this debris but a considerable amount remains in the corner at the railway. Help would be appreciated in clearing this.
On Sunday 16th Nov.
we planted an area of bank on the East of the pond with bluebell bulbs supplied by the Council. It was a beautiful Autumn day ,calm and sunny all day with heavy rain on the following Monday - perfect for planting. There was very little notice given for the event but 6 adults and 3 children turned out. This was enough to do the job.
