Purple Crocus

Rotary, the World Health Organization, UNICEF and the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention launched the Global Polio Eradication Initiative in 1988 using the purple crocus as the symbol of the End Polio Campaign

In 2007, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation joined Rotary in its commitment to ending polio and they renewed this commitment in 2020. Rotary has now committed to raising $50 million dollars over the next 3 years and for every $1 raised, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will donate an additional $2.

The campaign has reached more than 2.5 billion children with the vaccine.

There are fewer polio cases today than ever before, but the campaign will not stop until there are no children at risk of polio.

The Rotary Club in Edinburgh donated 1000 purple crocus bulbs to Friends of Figgate in September 2020 and they were planted through the grass in Fruity Corner.

Keep a look out and as they appear in Springtime

Many thanks to the Rotary Club
